Welcome to the January 2013 Natural Living Blog Carnival: Green Confessions. This post was written for inclusion in the monthly Natural Living Blog Carnival hosted by Happy Mothering and The Pistachio Project through the Green Moms Network. This month our members have written posts about areas of their life where they aren't as "green" as they may want to be.
I am taking part in the natural living blog carnival. I was intrigued by the question that was posed for this month, Green Confessions. Nobody is perfect and sometimes conveniences come in the way of eco-friendly practices. So the question is, what changes have we not yet made in our family? How can we improve?
Every new year I write about what our family's green resolutions will be for the coming up year and I also reflect upon what my resolutions were the year before. This is what I wrote in December 2011:
My goals for 2012: My main goal for our family is to eat healthier. For me eating healthier does not only mean doing away with all the chocolate and other treats but also buying more organic and locally grown items. I visit farmer's markets during the Spring and Summer but I would like to do a better job of visiting them year round. I want to make sure that we buy all our meats and diary products from local and organic sources. We also will try our hand again at a vegetable garden.
As I reflect back on 2012 I feel that I have accomplished my goals, mostly. Did we eat healthier? Yes. I made a much more conscience effort to buy local and healthy. And how did my gardening venture turn out this year? It was a little bit more successful than the previous year but there's still room for improvement.
The one resolution I have made in 2013 is to use less paper towels. In the past I have easily grabbed the paper towels to clean up messes where I could of used a cloth wipe instead. I get grossed out by reusing cloths for certain "messier" jobs but I plan to try harder this year. I will probably still grab a few paper towels to clean up cat throw up but for easier jobs I will turn to my new set of "Unpaper Towels" I made recently. (Pictured below)

We use too many paper towels too! I love your unpaper towels! Awesome idea!
ReplyDeleteSuch cute towels! I have tried going that way - but mine aren't nearly as inviting as yours (cut from an old sheet). What a great idea to roll them on the paper towel holder: that way you reach for them without thinking. I find it's the old habits that are hardest to break away from.
ReplyDelete(Tot ziens, ik ga vaker een beetje rondkijken op je blog).
Good for you! I love the idea of unpaper towels but we just rely on rags at our house. Good luck with your 2013 resolutions!
ReplyDeleteI love the look of these, but I have to be a bit more practical for our family. I would be the only one putting them back on, and eventually I wouldn't. Instead, we have a stack of cloth wipes made out of recycled T-shirts in a drawer.
ReplyDeleteI LOVE to see how you can look back on your green resolutions for previous years, look at it and reflect to see how well you did on that this year! I resolve to use less paper towels as well and it's sadly something I do better with for a little while, then I sink back into what's easier. Love that you are holding yourself accountable by writing them down and looking back on them later to see where you can improve even more!
